Malaysian jazz remained an almost unknown chapter of music history — until DJs from the Habibi Funk label, touring Malaysia and Indonesia, stumbled upon the recordings of pianist, composer and arranger Alfonso Soliano. That discovery became the foundation for the debut release of the new sister label Audible Beauty Records — a collection of 11 tracks originally recorded for Radio Television Malaysia and issued at the time in a tiny run of a few dozen copies, made exclusively for radio broadcast.
Soliano is rightly regarded as one of the foundational figures of Malaysian music: his original compositions fuse jazz with Latin rhythms and traditional Malay musical forms into a distinctive, instantly recognizable sound. The sessions also featured other key figures of the era's Malaysian scene — composers Johari Salleh and Ahmad Nawab. In spirit, the material sits alongside the work of Salah Ragab, Ahmed Malek, Mulatu Astatke and Dollar Brand.
The record comes as a gatefold LP with a 12-page booklet attached to the sleeve: in-depth essays, previously unpublished archival photographs and historical documents piece together the musician's biography and legacy. The release is fully licensed from the Soliano family.
