Finnish group Halme Prospekt, led for more than 20 years by legendary musician Heikki "Hepa" Halme, is known for its free, improvisational approach blending jazz, blues, acid jazz, and hip hop. Over a career spanning five decades, Halme has left his mark on numerous genres of the Finnish scene, from punk to roots rock. The band's new album, Music Is My Truth, was born from a chance encounter: in late 2023, at the opening of a group exhibition of West African artists at the Villa Karo cultural center in Grand-Popo, Benin, Halme met Togolese singer Queen Djenny Djella. Her charisma made such a powerful impression on the musician that he immediately proposed a collaboration, drawing on unused tracks from earlier band sessions. The meeting place was symbolic — the former Slave Coast, from which traditions carried away gave rise to spirituals, jazz, reggae, and blues. Djenny's vocals blended organically into the group's psychedelic, melancholic sound, performed by Arttu Tolonen (keys), Alf Forsman (drums), Esa Onttonen (guitar), Tapani Varis (bass, flute), and Eero Savela (trumpet). The resulting album is not African music in the conventional sense, but a work of its own, merging the warm, hopeful spirit of West Africa with Nordic psychedelia. After four singles and music videos, the full album is now finally out, with European live shows planned for late 2025 and/or spring 2026.
