Released via Oregon’s Perpetual Stew label, EPILOGUE brings together the turntable talents of veteran deck wreckers D-Styles, Excess, Mike Boo, and Pryvet Peepsho. Originally, the quartet was dedicated to a single concept: Create five songs in five days. (The group’s name reflects that: five songs, four DJs, five days). But since 2019’s eponymously titled debut, they’ve blown way past the designated track limit. They’ve done it here, too. Clocking in at 12 tracks, EPILOGUE is a woozy blend of slinky, hypnotic drum breaks topped with rhythmic cuts and atmospheric samples: “Abnormal Heights” ushers spacey sci-fi synths into the mix; “Honey Game” bobs with a Tropicália lilt; and “Luke’s Broken Amp” puts gnawing buzzsaw bass tones center stage. The album’s most dramatic moment, “Evacuation Route” feels like the imaginary soundtrack to a nervy, post-apocalyptic escape scene.
