Wolverhampton five-piece The Twang were part of the last wave of British indie bands to break into the charts, but their second album found them needing to reassert their relevance in a market now dominated by urban pop. Their debut, Love It When I Feel Like This, reached the Top Five but came saddled with a reputation for loud, laddish, occasionally grating Happy Mondays-style bravado. On the follow-up, Jewellery Quarter, the band deliberately soften their sound, leaning into a more sensitive, radio-friendly approach. The results are strongest when they step outside their familiar baggy revivalist mode: lead single "Barney Rubble" pairs jangly guitars with Latin rhythms, while "May I Suggest" and "Got No Interest" continue in the vein of their biggest hit, "Either Way," as melodic, bittersweet ballads. "Twit Twoo" leans into synth-driven indie pop, and "Williamsburg" moves toward subtle, brooding folk-pop. The band's sound is still marked by frontman Phil Etheridge's thick regional accent, which can wear thin over a full album but works well when balanced against Martin Saunders' smoother vocals, as on the acoustic "Encouraging Sign." Not every experiment pays off — tracks like "Put It on the Dancefloor" and "Back Where We Started" fall back on more generic, rowdy terrace-anthem territory. Overall, though, the second album is a noticeably more cohesive and enjoyable listen than the debut, giving the band a real shot at staying afloat amid the crowded field of British guitar acts.
