German saxophonist and composer Matti Klessascheck releases his debut album Airports, dedicated to liminal spaces — states of transition between "not here anymore" and "not quite there yet" that define airports as places filled with personal memory, departure, and a reconsideration of home. The album's thirteen tracks alternate between expansive compositions and compact miniatures performed in solo, duo, and trio formats, each offering a different perspective on the central theme. Klessascheck is joined by an ensemble of promising young talents from the German jazz scene alongside long-standing collaborators, whose mature playing lends the music immediacy and shapes the pieces beyond their written form. On Airports I, Leon Hattori's synth lines echo the announcement sounds of Cologne/Bonn Airport, while the opening track's melodic gestures nod to Brian Eno's landmark Music for Airports. Circular and Unfold explore the shifting nature of memory, piecing melodies together into a mosaic before fragmenting them again through bass, drums, and tenor saxophone, while the intimate Airports III shrinks the sonic space of piano and saxophone to an almost private scale. Supported by the LOFT Köln recording project in 2024 and awarded the jury prize, the album grew out of the musician's graduation project — with it, Klessascheck introduces himself as a distinctive new voice in contemporary jazz, impressing equally as a saxophonist, composer, and bandleader.
