Magic Seas are a British indie and dream pop duo consisting of brothers James and John Prudence. Formed in 2017 and based in Essex, the pair blends atmospheric soundscapes with 60s and 80s indie influences. They collaborate closely with producer Mark Gardener at his OX4 Sound studio to refine their unique, layered sound.

Brothers James and John Prudence grew up in a musical household in Essex and have performed together as Magic Seas since 2017. After a handful of singles and a split EP with The Cult of Free Love in 2019, they released their debut album Paint the Waves in 2022. Mark Gardener of Ride has worked with them since their earliest recordings, responding to a demo they sent him even before the band had played a single gig — a rare vote of confidence in the streaming era, when most acts must prove themselves publicly first. Recordings take place at Gardener's OX4 Sound studio, where, the brothers say, years of collaboration have built an intuitive understanding that needs little explanation.
John plays acoustic guitar and harmonica, James plays electric guitar and keyboards, a drum machine is used in the studio, and the pair have recently been exploring more layered vocal harmonies. They describe their sound as a blend of 60s and 80s indie influences — from Gene Clark, Velvet Underground and The Byrds to 90s Britpop — alongside songwriting influences Townes Van Zandt and Nick Drake, and the sonic textures of shoegaze, including Slowdive and Cocteau Twins. A guiding principle is squeezing as much sound as possible out of just the two of them, which gives their music an unconventional, atmospheric texture, especially audible on the instrumental, soundscape-like tracks of their third album, From This View.
That record was shaped by a heavy touring schedule the year before, as the need to win over unfamiliar audiences quickly made the sound tighter and more immediate. Their just-finished fourth album, In Both Directions, due out in summer 2026, reflects a year of personal and creative highs and lows, James says: the sound has become more open, with fewer overdubs, though still containing expansive moments — a juxtaposition of contrasts delivered simply. The band's name, and the sense of space that runs through their music, draws heavily on the flat, wide-skied landscape of their native Essex.
The band's route to wider audiences owes much to Mark Gardener's backing: he put them forward to play Tim Burgess's Tim Peaks Diner at Kendal Calling, which in turn led to their appearance at London's Merch Market in January 2026 — an event the brothers recall warmly as a gathering of like-minded people discovering new bands and connections. Asked what defines the 90s for them personally, James names Oasis and "Wonderwall," while John cites Supergrass singles and The Bluetones' album Expecting to Fly.
