Wellington-based singer-songwriter Romi Wrights releases her debut album Andy on Mānuka Recordings, following the singles "Bring It Back/Without You," "Capsized," and "Shine Your Light." The record's twelve songs form an expansive statement on love, loss, and reconnection — a personal chronicle of a life's joys and sorrows. Co-written with composer and producer Kenny Sterling, the label's co-founder, the album was recorded across three cities — Auckland, Wellington, and Dublin — with musicians from Clear Path Ensemble, Leao, and The Circling Sun, alongside people close to Wrights herself.
At the emotional center of the album is Wrights' friendship with DJ Andrea Orani, known as DJ Andyheartthrob, who was among the first to believe in her musical talent. Following her friend's death, the songs written in her honor became a source of inspiration for Wrights — both personal and, she hopes, universal for listeners.
Musically, the album draws on 1960s soul, 1970s Southern funk, jazz fusion, and classic dub reggae, weaving these influences into a cinematic whole. The arrangements — from piano and flutes to funk rhythm sections and orchestral woodwinds and strings — are built to underscore the dynamics of Wrights' voice as it moves from intimate to expansive. Tracking took place across several studios, including Roundhead Studios and Sterling Studios, where the album was also mixed and produced; mastering was handled by Josh Llewellyn at Downbeat Mastering, in memory of Wrights' late friend.
