Spiritual Boy is a special solo album by legendary keyboardist Ian McLagan, a member of the iconic bands Small Faces and Faces.
The album is dedicated entirely to the memory of his close friend, collaborator, and Small Faces/Faces bassist Ronnie Lane, who passed away in 1997 after a long battle with multiple sclerosis.
The album's title (Spiritual Boy) is an affectionate nickname McLagan gave to Ronnie Lane. The disc includes both McLagan's original songs and reimagined compositions written by Lane himself.
The music is filled with McLagan's recognizable vintage keyboard parts on Hammond B-3 and Wurlitzer piano, combined with the soulful acoustic and slide guitars of his Texas band, The Bump Band.
Instead of sorrow, the album is imbued with a light sadness, warmth, humor and nostalgia for the golden era of British pub rock and folk blues of the 1970s.
