British musician David Carroll, a lifelong devotee of folk music, releases the third album of his project Bold Reynold — «Free» — eleven traditional songs delivered with the energy that puts the rock back into folk rock. Carroll's path began in the 1970s, touring Britain in vans with folk band Spinning Wheel on the then-thriving folk club and college circuit. The rise of punk eroded interest in older musical forms, pushing Carroll to qualify as a stringed-instrument maker and repairer, a trade that grew into a long career in the musical instrument industry. Alongside this, he played in various bands and duos, performed solo, and built a steady career in live and studio session work, mastering instruments ranging from uilleann pipes and Appalachian dulcimer to guitar, bouzouki and mandolin. The idea of a solo album fermented for years before finally taking shape in 2022, followed by «Bold Reynold Two», and now «Free». The new record brings together musicians from storied British folk-rock groups: Dave Oberle and Brian Gulland of Gryphon, guitarist Graeme Taylor, fiddler Chris Leslie of Fairport Convention, plus Tom Spencer of The Professionals and The Men They Couldn't Hang, and Lucy Cooper. The album's rich soundscape draws on an unusual instrumental palette — crumhorns, cor anglais and uilleann pipes alongside fiddle, tabla, bouzouki and dulcimer, rounded out by bass, drums and electric guitar.
