Carol Kaye is one of the most influential bassists in the history of American popular music. Active through the 1960s and 1970s as a member of the legendary studio group The Wrecking Crew — Los Angeles's elite team of session musicians — she took part in the recording of several thousand songs, earning her the title "Queen of Sessions." Her distinctive bass lines can be heard on countless iconic hits of the era, including recordings by The Beach Boys. As one of the first women to gain recognition in the male-dominated session industry, Kaye not only helped shape the sound of an entire era of popular music but also became an outstanding educator, exerting significant influence on later generations of bass players.
Marking the 75th anniversary of the start of her career and her upcoming 90th birthday, the new issue presents a collection of her landmark recordings on an accompanying CD, curated by music writer Hirokazu Yakame, known for his in-depth commentary.
