The two-part Magik Sunset series caps off an epic crate-digging effort that took over a year to complete, tracking down ultra-rare tracks issued in minuscule runs — often on private presses that barely reached beyond a handful of listeners in specific corners of the world. Identifying the original artists proved a serious challenge: many left almost no trace in searchable records, some turned out to be living in remote parts of the US decades later, and others had changed their names, further complicating the trail. The result of this near-detective undertaking was so much material that the finale had to be split into two volumes. The first, Magik Sunset Part One, has already been released and praised, landing as Compilation of the Week on Lauren Laverne's BBC 6 Music show. Earlier in the same series, Magik Sunrise was named Piccadilly Records' Compilation of the Year for 2013: critics hailed Psychemagik as the undisputed kings of the remix, noting that the duo doesn't just rework other artists' tracks but fundamentally deconstructs their reason for existing, while FACT and Mixmag singled the release out among the year's standout mystical dancefloor moments.
