In the mid-1960s, at the height of the British Invasion, a young songwriting genius worked behind the scenes of the pop scene: Graham Gouldman, who would later found the quintessential art-pop band 10cc. Still a teenager and working part-time in a men's clothing store, he churned out hit after hit, drawing inspiration from ordinary, everyday scenes — bus rides, small domestic observations. This is how "Bus Stop" for The Hollies and "No Milk Today" for Herman's Hermits came about. Among his credits is "For Your Love," written for The Yardbirds — a song that became a turning point in British rock history: it was this track, deemed "too pop," that drove Eric Clapton to leave the band, opening the door for Jeff Beck, whose arrival revealed a far more experimental sound. Taken together, these early compositions — a kind of "1000cc" — form a condensed but comprehensive prologue to his later major project, 10cc, showcasing the melodic gift that made him one of the key behind-the-scenes architects of the British Invasion.
