British singer, producer and NTS Radio DJ Rose Keeler-Schaffeler, long known under the name Keel Her as one of the defining figures of DIY bedroom pop, releases Universal Language on Magic Hollow — the label's second release and her most unexpected statement to date. The record was written and recorded during pregnancy and the first year of motherhood, and it is built not on language but on what precedes it: coos, cries, sighs and instinctive sounds that emerge before words yet already carry a musical nature. Watching her newborn son develop his first forms of communication, Rose began using his pre-verbal vocalisations as a starting point and raw material for her own compositions.

Produced by Daniel O'Sullivan, the album is built almost entirely from Rose's own voice, save for a handful of low male vocal parts performed by the producer. Across twelve tracks, layered vocals intertwine with subtle electronics, tape effects, synthesizers and muted drum machines: at times evoking the purity of medieval sacred music, at others dissolving into ambient textures or looping into hypnotic patterns where soloist, choir and atmosphere become indistinguishable. Universal Language emerges as a meditation on the voice as our first instrument, our first language and our first experience of connection.
