Guitarist Davey Allan, leading the band The Arrows, rose to fame in 1966 with the instrumental track "Blue's Theme," featured in the film "The Wild Angels," and went on to become one of the most sought-after composers of soundtracks for 1960s biker films, earning the nickname "King of Fuzz" for his signature distorted guitar sound. Yet the musician's actual lifestyle stood in sharp contrast to the biker mythology his music evoked: Allan never rode a motorcycle and stayed clear of the drunken, wild parties associated with the biker subculture on screen and off. Instead, he led a disciplined, steady studio career, recording day after day alongside former high school classmate Mike Curb, who would later become a producer. Unlike many bands of the era worn down by punishing tour schedules, The Arrows found touring to be more of a break than a burden. It's precisely this distance from the bohemian biker lifestyle that explains the band's distinctive fuzz sound: rooted not in blues or country traditions, but in a unique Californian surf music lineage that borders on psychedelic pop. This sound is now the subject of reissue as the 46th installment in the "60's GARAGE ROCKIN' OLDAYS" series from label All Days Records, curated by music expert Jimmy Masuko.
