British trumpeter Sean Corby, with decades of work in music behind him, presents Hancestry, the debut album of his new project, The Solomon Gundy Band. The record marks a point where personal history and collective legacy meet: after navigating a series of life crises and a period of creative silence, Corby returns with a work that reflects on the legacy of Jazz Warriors, the legendary collective at the roots of black British jazz in the 1980s. Through the new album, that legacy is extended toward today's generation of musicians working at the intersection of jazz and adjacent club and street sounds, out of which the current UK Jazz scene has grown.
For the recording, Corby brought together a multi-generational, international line-up, inviting saxophonist Courtney Pine — one of the key figures of British jazz — and young pianist Sultan Stevenson, one of the scene's most notable emerging names, as guests. This pairing of veterans and rising stars underscores the album's central idea: continuity and dialogue across generations.
The musical language of Hancestry takes shape at the crossroads of jazz, Afro-diasporic rhythmic traditions, soul, punk, and electronica. Corby himself describes the resulting sound as "the sound of the In-Between" — a space between styles, eras, and identities, where his music is born.
