Rei Low’s Beware! The Devil Masquerades as an Angel of Light investigates the intersections of mysticism, generative audio, meditation, and club music. Inspired by a vital spiritual experience that manifested from studying medieval Christian texts and Carl Jung’s Liber Novus and diving deeper into Max/MSP programming, Beware! is an anomalous piece of outsider music. Following up on Rei Low’s Towards a Secret Light, this project leans harder into generative, acousmatic, and algorithmic composition.
His interest in epistemology and metaphysics informs the existential questions posed implicitly in the project: What is the role of spirituality in modern techno-capitalist life? Does our mediated access to noumenal reality by subjective sense data constitute the modern self? Can we be certain of our experience of the Outside when we have no way to access it? Has media and technology supplanted our ability to identify what we worship and value ethically?
Ultimately, Beware! is a project of programming algorithms to imply human emotion. The noumenal inhuman code that was written in Max, jаvascript and C by Rei Low expresses, via parameters, signals, and systems, the idiosyncrasies of his own creative process, acting as autonomous artifacts that could write music endlessly. The onus is on the listener’s subconscious and conscious mind to ascribe meaning to calculated music. Similar to AI generative music or something concocted by a boardroom of executives, this is highly controlled, deterministic music, but it is the listener's understanding of and relationship to the music that ascribes meaning. Like one’s relationship to God, sometimes it is easier to chalk up a serendipitous occurrence to a higher power than to the anonymous relations of algorithm and economic production. Certainly, we can never be certain as to what lies beyond our senses; we can only guess.
