Tenor saxophonist Lester Young shaped a sound that became a cornerstone of cool jazz — a cool, floating tone and loose, airborne phrasing that stood in contrast to the harder, harmonically dense approach of Coleman Hawkins. By the early 1950s his influence had reached its peak, and his work with producer Norman Granz brought steady income. Yet at that very moment, depression and alcoholism began undermining his health and making his playing increasingly erratic.
Even so, most of Young's recordings from that decade remain strong. On February 6, 1958, less than a year and a half before his death, he recorded Laughin' To Keep From Cryin' with a solid rhythm section and two swing-era trumpeters, Roy Eldridge and Harry "Sweets" Edison, who played mostly muted, leaving Young the central role. The material includes a ballad medley, a couple of simple originals, and several standards.
A standout feature of the session is Young's return to clarinet — for the first time in over fifteen years — on "Salute To Benny" and "They Can't Take That Away From Me." His reading of the latter is achingly melancholic and emotionally raw, ranking among the finest moments of his later years.
