The Alchemy of Counterpoint - Works by Johann Sebastian Bach from the Notebook for Wilhelm Friedemann Bach and the Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach.
Bach would not be Bach if he had not already thought of adding additional instruments to his didactic keyboard pieces. The ensemble aims to explore Bach's musical ideas by expanding the musical score with an additional dimension of sound, intending to make audible the musical ideas that may have moved the great composer...
Johann Sebastian was an outstanding keyboard virtuoso, but he is also said to have been an excellent string player. The nyckelharpa, which was most likely no longer in proper use in the German-speaking world during the High Baroque period, combines these two musical souls of Bach: with this bowed instrument with sympathetic strings the pitch is changed using a keyboard. The original works and transcriptions performed in this special instrumentation bring out both harmonic complexity and cantabile playing.
