Legendary jazz drummer Jack DeJohnette (1942–2025), who by then was avoiding travel and living near Woodstock, New York, recorded an album over two days at a nearby studio that may well turn out to be his final studio work — made less than a year before his death. DeJohnette left behind nearly a hundred album credits on ECM, including every recording with the classic Keith Jarrett Trio, early work with Pat Metheny, and the Charles Lloyd Quartet; alongside Elvin Jones and Tony Williams, he is regarded as part of jazz's "holy trinity" of drummers.
The record took shape as a duo project that effectively became a trio. Central to it is oud specialist Joseph Tawadros, whose collaboration with DeJohnette dates back to 2011's The Hour of Separation (featuring John Patitucci, at the instigation of John Abercrombie) and the subsequent tour with bassist Drew Gress. A decade and a half later, an ongoing friendship and correspondence between Tawadros and DeJohnette led to the idea of a duo album. Kora player Yacouba Sissoko, born in Mali and based in Brooklyn, joined for the second day of recording. His interplay with Tawadros is virtuosic and subtle, but above all defined by deep mutual understanding — music built on dialogue rather than display.
DeJohnette himself remains the album's emotional center, having once described himself as "more of a colorist than a drummer." On several tracks he steps away from the drum kit to play Hang Drum, keyboard synth, and an Indian tabla synth, shaping delicate, precisely placed textures. The freely improvised track "Free Spirits" stands out for its rare sense of mutual understanding between the musicians. The album is described as a unique document that demands to be heard — possibly the final testament of one of jazz's greatest drummers.
