TOP RANK, the Montego Bay–based label run by producer E.J. Robinson through the 1980s and '90s, stood as one of the defining names in Jamaican reggae of its era, releasing dozens of notable singles. Now its catalogue is getting a second life: VP Records has launched a large-scale reissue project, remastering TOP RANK's original master tapes and bringing them to digital streaming for the first time.
The opening chapter is REGGAE VAULT VOL. 1, the first entry in a compilation series drawn from the label's archive. Its twelve tracks center on late-'80s-to-early-'90s dancehall, with some songs presented as extended 12-inch "DISCOMIX" versions paired with a dub cut, and others followed by their riddim "version." Many credits go to "TOP RANK GANG," a collective name for the musicians and production team behind the label.
The tracklist gathers singles originally released on 7- and 12-inch vinyl in Jamaica and beyond: Frankie Paul's iconic "Ride On" (1985), Little John's much-reissued "School Girl," Foxy Brown's 1989 reggae cover of Natalie Cole's "Miss You Like Crazy," Johnny Osbourne's "Let The Champion Play" (1990), Singling Melody's "Everytime I Close My Eyes," Al Campbell's "How Long," and Delroy Wilson's "Happy Birthday," which since 1992 has become a sound-system-party staple for birthday celebrations. Many tracks are remakes built on classic riddims, alongside plenty of purely digital-riddim dancehall cuts. All twelve songs appear newly remastered and are available exclusively via digital release.
