Firas Zreik - Tarabesque (2026) [Hi-Res]

BAND/ARTIST: Firas Zreik

Palestinian composer and kanunist Firas Zreik, based in New York, releases Tarabesque — his most ambitious work to date. At its center is the kanun, the traditional Mediterranean string harp, which Zreik uses not only as a melodic instrument but as a rhythmic one, bringing together a jazz quartet, a hybrid ensemble, and an Arab Takht ensemble around it. Melodies built on the Maqam system are woven into a dense harmonic and modal fabric, producing a sound that feels simultaneously rooted in tradition and boldly innovative.

Zreik's career is already marked by significant achievements: he received Grammy recognition as a songwriter and performer on Residente's album "Las Letras Ya No Importan," composed the film score album The Art of Kanun, commissioned by Universal Music Production France, was an official showcase artist at WOMEX 2022, received a MacDowell Fellowship, and has performed at venues including Lincoln Center, Joe's Pub, and The Jazz Gallery.

Tarabesque marks the emergence of a new musical language for Zreik — a synthesis of Tarab, the ecstatic listening state at the heart of Arab musical tradition, with a wide range of global influences. The result is a sound that is at once timeless, urgent, and entirely his own.
