Singer Marcovitz, whose sharp, piercing vocals were a defining feature of her debut album Horse of a Different Feather, noticeably softens her delivery on her follow-up — aptly titled Joie de Vivre! — giving it more nuance and feeling. Her musical range widens too, taking in disco on "Pretty Young Boys" and the deliberately tasteless Broadway camp that runs through nearly the rest of the record. Marcovitz's signature dark humor surfaces across a variety of subjects: on "Drop Dead" — built around spoken delivery over a country/folk backing — she sharply cuts down a self-absorbed boyfriend, wishing him dead outright; "The Divorce" turns a wry eye on marital breakup, while the title track "Joie de Vivre" does the same for spousal murder. There's tenderness here too: "Don't Call It Love" captures the first fluttering stirrings of romance. The album closes with "Angel of Death," where Marcovitz pulls off something few artists manage — making a longing for death sound genuinely charming.
