French trio Tako Toki has taken creative self-sufficiency to an extreme: beyond composing their own music, the musicians build all their instruments themselves — from the waste of consumerist civilization — sew their own costumes, and record and photograph themselves. Following their debut album "Hirsutes Farfelus," which was warmly received by both audiences and critics in France and abroad, the group has released a new work, "Un Dimanche à Monaco." The lineup has stabilized, and the band's "survivalist" instrument-making has grown noticeably more refined, with their homemade contraptions now producing increasingly subtle and varied sounds. The new repertoire freely blends genres, drawing on Balkan dance rhythms, a reimagined samba, chamber Afrobeat, and Asian influences.
Songlines rated the album 8 out of 10 and named it "album of the week," noting that the band's skill in crafting instruments from found materials rivals their musicianship. Rootsworld highlighted how the album celebrates the universal human love of rhythm, melody, and harmony, with the group's use of literal junk serving as a reminder that, despite shops full of gleaming instruments and unused guitars gathering dust, musicians will always find a way to make music. French outlet Alternative Radio praised the band's joyful DIY spirit, describing the album as a singular sonic journey between the Balkans, Afro-Latin grooves, and Asian influences.
