Pakistani American musician Ali Sethi has released Room Jhoom, a quiet meditation on separation and longing made with American drummer and composer Gregory Rogove. Sethi was born and trained in Pakistan under vocalists like Farida Khanum and Ustad Naseeruddin Saami, but the country has grown increasingly hostile toward him: since coming out in 2024 he has faced a wave of abuse from right-wing groups, and his Instagram — like most Pakistani artists' — remains blocked in India, his widest audience, following the recent India-Pakistan conflict.
The album continues the themes of censorship and exile explored on his 2025 debut Love Language, but carries a more serene, at-ease quality. On "Jogi Mera," Rogove builds a hypnotic pulse from muted drums that evoke distant temple bells while Sethi repeats the name of a Sufi wanderer, blending Sufi sama with desert folk textures. "Flying," an ode to Krishna and Holi, features Gyan Riley on subtle acoustic guitar and barely-there percussion. Central throughout is Sethi's command of the meend — the vocal glide between notes without a perceptible break, a hallmark of Hindustani classical singing.
Most lyrics are in the Khari Boli and Braj Bhasha dialects, poetic languages long used by lovers and poets.
