Nigerian-British percussionist and multi-instrumentalist Adewale centers his album "Metamorphosis" on the berimbau — a Brazilian musical bow of African origin, built from a single string and a gourd resonator. Drawing on the cosmology of the Bantu Bakongo people, he constructs a cycle of tracks that alternate between minimalist solo pieces and denser ensemble passages, with a sound that at times resembles an authentic field recording, carrying the same unpolished, documentary honesty. On "Wood and Tone," the instrument reveals its full percussive-melodic duality: its timbre feels simultaneously recognizably human and almost zoomorphic, like the call of some unknown creature. "Heartbeat of the Ancestors" is built on slow, heavy drum strikes and wordless shouts that gradually build tension toward a dense climax. "Path to the Rising Sun" keeps the listener in a state of viscous, uneasy simmering, circling around a single hypnotic idea. The record closes with the more unhurried "Passagem Sagrada," an ambient piece whose beauty conceals a palpable mystery. Overall, the album is demanding of its listener: it resists passive listening and rewards only those willing to immerse themselves in its challenging sonic world.
