In Asheville, North Carolina, three acclaimed roots musicians — Billy Cardine, Anya Hinkle, and Mary Lucey — came together to form TANASI, a trio whose sound sits at the crossroads of Appalachian string-band tradition and global folk music. Cardine plays dobro and slide instruments, Hinkle sings and plays guitar, and Lucey handles vocals, upright bass, and clawhammer banjo. Each brings decades of touring and recording: Cardine is known for pioneering slide work and collaborations with John Paul Jones, Edgar Meyer, Jerry Douglas, and Debashish Bhattacharya; Lucey helped shape contemporary string-band music through The Biscuit Burners and Uncle Earl; Hinkle is an award-winning songwriter with internationally celebrated solo albums, including Eden and Her Borderlands and OCEANIA. Together they have performed at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Ryman Auditorium, as well as festivals including Bonnaroo, MerleFest, Grey Fox, RockyGrass, and the Earl Scruggs Music Festival, touring across Europe and Asia. TANASI's music traces connections across cultures and landscapes — from Nepal and South Africa to Appalachia — drawing on shared human rituals of singing, dancing, grieving, and loving. In 2025, the trio received a National Endowment for the Arts USArtists International Grant, and in 2026 they will release their self-titled debut album TANASI.
