Vocalist and composer Pooja Goswami Pavan, raised in the tradition of Hindustani classical music under the guidance of her father Pandit Surendra Goswami and now based in Minneapolis, has created a seven-song album inspired by the poetry of the 15th-century Indian mystic Kabir. The album is titled "The Mind, Ecstatic." Five of the compositions are her own, two were written by her father and guru, and the arrangements were handled by longtime collaborator Ranjan Sharma, whose work bridges acoustic sound with technological precision. The songs move through themes characteristic of Kabir's poetry: the dissolution of ego, terror and laughter, embodiment and infinity, and the inevitability of death likened to a wedding. The album is introduced by a foreword from Kabir scholar Dr. Linda Hess, author of several books on his legacy, in which she describes how singers have kept Kabir's poetry alive for six centuries through music. Pooja herself holds a PhD in Indian classical music from the University of Delhi, has performed on major stages in Minnesota and India, and has taught at the University of Minnesota and Macalester College. This is her fourth record of original compositions. Arranger Ranjan Sharma is a well-known New Delhi-based composer and sound designer who also works in film and television.
