Helga Myhr, a fiddler from the Hallingdal valley, was named Norway's finest Hardanger fiddle player in 2025 by the jury of Landskappleiken, the country's oldest and most important national folk music and dance championship, held since 1896. She won the title performing tunes from her home region.
Myhr made her solo debut in 2019 with the album "Natten veller seg ut" and has since established herself as a versatile musician, working across contemporary and improvised settings — in the project Dei Kjenslevare, in a duo with cellist Tanja Orning, and in collaboration with saxophonist Mats Gustafsson — as well as across various strands of Norwegian traditional music.
Her new album "Slåttespel" is her first recording devoted entirely to traditional tunes from Hallingdal, the music she has played since childhood and worked with throughout her career. On the record, Myhr performs on three historic fiddles — made by Gunnar A. Røstad (1915), Anders C. Kleven (1898), and Gjermund Tjønn (1974) — with a bow made by Niels J. Røine in 2019. Beyond the flawless performances, the album stands out for its exceptional sound quality, recorded and mixed by Magnus Skavhaug Nergaard and mastered by Helge Sten.
