"Lacuna" (2012) is the second full-length album by the American indie/folk project The Mockingbirds, led by musician, vocalist, and songwriter Paul McNees.
The album was conceived and recorded by Paul McNees as a dedication to his father, who passed away in May 2011. The title "Lacuna" ("gap," "missing link") reflects themes of memory, grief, and the search for inner balance.
The music is a sophisticated, intimate, and acoustic art-folk with a wealth of live instrumentation. Unlike standard guitar-based folk, it makes extensive use of double bass, cello, accordion, saw, and cornet.
The album was produced and musically directed by Mark Growden, who brought in a cast of prominent musicians from the Bay Area's avant-garde and jazz scenes.
