Steve Oliver - Inner Fire (2026) [CD-Rip]

To provide a tantalizing first impression of the album’s vibrant sound, Oliver released the first single, ‘Dancing in the Sand’, an exotic, Latin American-tinged groove featuring his signature guitar melodies and compelling vocal hooks. The track features a brilliant duet with renowned guitarist Peter White, whose enchanting guitar playing adds an extra layer of magic to the recording. In its first week, ‘Dancing in the Sand’ was added to SiriusXM Watercolors, played at The Dave Koz Lounge, and quickly became the most added new single on Billboard and Mediabase’s smooth jazz radio charts. It currently sits at number 22 on the Billboard chart and is still climbing. Oliver is a sonic alchemist who blends vibrant shades of jazz, R&B, and pop into a rich, dynamic soundscape. Guided by his playing on electric, nylon-string, and acoustic guitar, he weaves expansive harmonies and lush melodies into deep grooves. As both composer and producer, Oliver describes ‘Inner Fire’ as a musical journey through adversity, embracing change, overcoming challenges, and ultimately finding inner strength, renewed hope, and the promise of a new day.

“Inner Fire was born in a year that both tested and transformed me,” said he, born in the Bay Area and now living in the Southern California desert. “The title reflects the quiet strength that helped me through it, and my conviction that music heals the soul. That passion burns deep within me and manifests in a voice that is steadfast and powerful. I believe that each of us carries that same inner fire within—sometimes gentle, sometimes fiery—and that all that is needed is the courage to stand up and make our voices heard, even in the face of doubt.”

The album opens with the upbeat ‘Hook Shot’, on which Oliver collaborates with nine-time GRAMMY® nominee Gerald Albright (bass) and GRAMMY® winner Michael Broening (keyboards) for an energetic track. Following the aforementioned single ‘Dancing in the Sand’ and the title track, this album offers another collaboration between Oliver and Broening, a tribute to George Benson, by adding Oliver’s own “vocal magic” to the legend’s number 1 hit, ‘Give Me The Night’. With his own spin on the song, his fresh interpretation is poised to become a new favorite. “When George attended my show in Arizona, he said softly afterwards: ‘You remind me of myself.’ I will always cherish that moment,” Oliver says enthusiastically. “I have added my own distinctive vocal style and dedicate this version to both George and songwriter Rod Temperton, whose artistry and influence have left an indelible mark on the soul of modern music,” says Oliver, who has a busy concert schedule in May in preparation for the launch of ‘Inner Fire’. ‘Missing You’ subsequently captures a deep sense of heartbreak and longing, carried by Oliver’s lyrical nylon-string guitar and wordless, expressive vocals. “Every farewell takes a little piece of our heart,” he says. “I wrote ‘Missing You’ while gently strumming my guitar and thinking about my love from afar. My hands started moving almost by themselves, and soon the melody said everything I couldn’t put into words.” Oliver’s colorful, sun-drenched desert setting takes listeners on an excursion through the breathtaking playground that is ‘Desert Euphoria’. “The desert is pure energy – burning sun, warm sand, and colors that change with electric intensity,” says Oliver. “Mornings glow golden while nights pulse with red, orange, and blue under an endless sky. While walking through the hills, my heartbeat in sync with every step, I feel a wave of freedom and possibilities. I wanted this song to move just like the desert itself – lively, buzzing, and pulsating with joy.” “‘Bounce Back’, which appears on the album both vocally and instrumentally, with Will Donato’s compelling saxophone playing, perfectly encapsulates Oliver’s philosophy for the album. “This powerful vocal track is about resilience – looking life’s obstacles straight in the eye and refusing to give up when knocked down. It is a powerful reminder that setbacks do not define us; how we react to them does. With an uplifting message and forward-thinking energy, the song encourages listeners to stay positive and look forward to the new day ahead. It is about perseverance, growth, and the unstoppable strength we discover when we choose to stand strong.” Optimism and ecstasy, together with Oliver’s compelling guitar and vocal combination, lift ‘Looking Up’ to new heights, an anthemic promise of better days. On the recording, Oliver plays synth piano on his guitar, together with keyboardist Dave Kochanski (Rippingtons).

Oliver wrote ‘Phoenix Rising’ as a tribute to the late percussionist Steve Reid (Rippingtons), who included the guitarist-singer in his band Bamboo Forest in 1996. Reid would later play an important role in Oliver’s solo career. The percussion on this respectful track was crucial, and Ramon Yslas fulfills that role with verve. “Steve (Reid) went through a lot in his life, but he possessed a quiet strength and deep wisdom that shaped everyone around him. Although he passed away last year, his spirit still resonates in the rhythms.” “From him I learned how to rise from the ashes like a phoenix—time and again,” says Oliver. ‘You Got It’ is subsequently a powerful affirmation, driven by Pablo Cruise’s tight rhythm section, consisting of drummer Sergio Gonzalez and bassist Larry Antonino. Oliver explains: “This song reminds us that life is there to teach us something, if only we are ready for it. And when we learn, we claim the self-confidence and strength that come with that knowledge.” ‘Inner Fire’ concludes with the guitar solo ‘Summer Tides’, in which Oliver’s guitar drives all the string and synthesizer sounds. His musings and reflections come and go like the tide washing along the coastline. “This song is inspired by quiet moments I spent playing guitar while looking at the beautiful Fraser River in British Columbia. I watched the tide rise and recede, while the sun slowly made its way across the sky. The movement was graceful, soothing, and inviting.” “It reminded me that in everyone’s life there are tides that know ebb and flow. Through it all, we remain constant – steadfast and peaceful at the center of change,” says Oliver. “I wanted this to be the message that lingers after the album ends – a gentle reminder of your own strength, inner peace, and the quiet power that lies within us all.” As a bonus track, you get the instrumental version of ‘Bounce Back’.

Steve dedicates this beautiful album to his father Harry G Oliver 3rd. It is a must for anyone who loves contemporary jazz and guitar music.
