One of the most successful albums by the American band from Iowa City, which moves on the border of deep funk, soul, boogaloo, soul jazz and vintage R&B. This is the band's fifth album, released in October 2010 by Pravda Records / Record Kicks.
Unlike previous, primarily instrumental Diplomats recordings, vocals play a much more prominent role on this album. After The Diplomettes joined in 2008, singers Sarah Cram and Katharine (Kat) Ruestow are back: they can be heard separately and in a duet.
The style can best be described as a mixture of retro funk, syncopated soul, boogaloo and Motown influences, but the band does not limit itself to a mere stylization of the sixties. Of particular interest are the unusual instrumentation, such as the use of violin in the track “Gimme One More Chance,” and the grand, epic soundscape of “No Man.”
