T. Gold’s (T. Gold, Carrboro, North Carolina) Saman Khoujinian and Gabriel Anderson met as teenagers in Miami and have tended a perpetual stew of creative projects around their adopted community of the Triangle ever since, including founding the independent label Sleepy Cat Records and staging the quadraphonic improvisational synthesizer collective Delver.

Along with longtime collaborators Joe MacPhail and Alex Bingham (plus a slew of transient guests including Libby Rodenbough, Chessa Rich, Ryan Johnson, Danny Abrams, and Dylan Turner), T. Gold is where the pair seek intentionality in their playful, roomy songcraft – everything a conversation, everything a deep hang, everything rich in the radical potential of community and the art it forges. On the group’s sophomore album, Life is a Wonder and It’s Cruel, T. Gold explores themes of alienation and hope through off-kilter pop-folk that evokes Buck Meek, Lee Hazlewood, J.J. Cale, and Andre Ethier.

No, this is not a somewhat melancholic, soul-inflected singer songwriter behind a name or a moniker of T. Gold, but a core duo of Saman Khoujinian and Gabe Anderson, supported by a hefty set of collaborators, on their second album with a tricky title of Life is a Wonder and It’s Cruel.

And yes, the duo’s music has that somewhat melancholic soul-inflected vibe throughout, but it is nonetheless quite complex in its structure at the same time and full of intricate melodies and Khoujinian’s excellent vocals. At the same time the whole concept is fiercely independent, as T. Gold is behind the Sleepy Cat Records and switching the recording and the production of the album between their living rooms and various recording studios.
