British singer Ruby from Huddersfield (West Yorkshire), known since 2009 as the lead vocalist of the critically acclaimed Submotion Orchestra, releases her second solo EP "No Rain, No Flowers". Her debut EP "Sincerely" (2023) earned support from Jamie Cullum, Craig Charles, Huey Morgan and other influential radio hosts.
The new eight-track work is a personal tale of growth through adversity: reflections on long-term love, fleeting intimacy, grief and the relationships that shape a person. The title expresses the idea that difficult experiences do not stand apart from growth but are essential to it. Musically, the EP blends contemporary shades of r&b, soul and hip hop; production comes primarily from Rob Mitchell of Abstract Orchestra, with contributions from El Train, Pitch 92 and Paal Singh.
Following the opening spoken word piece comes the gospel-tinged hip hop soul of "This Thing Called Life" featuring Illa J (brother of the late J Dilla) and Abstract Orchestra — an anthem of shared humanity beyond divisions. "Someone", featuring the vocals of Devin Tracy, moves in a downtempo 90s r&b vein and reminds us not to take love for granted; Manchester MC Abnormal Sleepz appears on the encouraging "You Can Get It", while fellow Mancunian PRIDO brings afrobeats flavour to the uplifting closer "When I'm With You". The ballad "On My Mind" and the pacier "Things Fall Apart" explore different facets of relationships, while "Dominos", inspired by a photograph of Ruby's daughter with her great-grandfather shortly before his passing, becomes a meditation on ageing, legacy and the inevitability of change.
