Both recordings were made live in 1983 at the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory and were digitally recorded by the staff of Melodia at the time.
Richters has performed in many chamber music collaborations, but perhaps because he and the Borodin String Quartet had come to know each other so well through numerous performances together, their live performance maintains a healthy sense of tension while still flowing naturally and effortlessly.
The interpretations of both pieces rank among the finest recordings of these works, and the Shostakovich in the second half, in particular, is a deeply compelling performance.
The interplay between the musicians and their exquisite articulation are achievements that could only be realized by this particular combination.
For this latest reissue, we remastered the recordings to improve upon the sound quality of previous versions.
We aimed to reconstruct the recordings from a musical perspective—transmitting the brilliance of the performance directly—while positively refining the stiffness and thinness characteristic of Melodia’s early digital recordings.
