The duo Liz and Ish, performing as Loma Suyo, present the album Paloma — a work that noticeably broadens the sonic boundaries of their earlier output through a deep immersion in world folklore and South American musical traditions. The instrumental palette of the record is striking in its diversity: Colombian wind gaitas sit alongside Afro-Colombian percussion — tamboras, llamadores, and tambor alegres — while the West African stringed ngoni meets the mbira, and South American charangos, tiples, and ronrocos, rounded out by a broad range of percussion gathered from cultures across the globe. The album's linguistic structure mirrors the musicians' own biography — exactly half the songs are sung in Spanish, the other half in English, underscoring the duo's bilingual, multicultural identity. Liz and Ish make their home in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York — a place far removed from the South American roots of the instruments they use, making Paloma something of a musical bridge between their present home and the traditions they've absorbed and reimagined.
