Greek-British musician Andy Dragazis, who has worked under the name Blue States for more than two decades, returns with a new album, Where The Fades Meet — a record that builds his signature cinematic, widescreen sound around a live choir for the first time. At the heart of the album is a six-piece vocal ensemble singing lead lines in unison, transforming intimate, small-scale songwriting into something communal and almost ritualistic in feel.
Over the years, Blue States has shifted shape repeatedly: starting as a one-man studio project, evolving into a touring live band, and returning, by the time of this album, to a studio-based solo endeavor led by Dragazis. Most of the recording took place in his London studio, with choir and string parts tracked in separate sessions. Dragazis describes working with a choir and string quartet as a deliberate step outside his creative comfort zone, one that pushed him to find new musical and technical solutions.
The choir's formation has a personal backstory: Dragazis reconnected with singer Tahita Bulmer, known for New Young Pony Club, who had contributed to his second album, Man Mountain, more than twenty years earlier. Bulmer introduced him to vocalist Stacey Dowdeswell, who assembled the six singers for the sessions. Their parts were recorded largely live, in a single take — a choice that preserved a raw, unrehearsed sincerity and sense of human presence that became central to the album's character. Bulmer herself joined the choir, closing the loop two decades after their first collaboration — and her distinctive voice occasionally rises out of the ensemble's collective sound.
Additional orchestral depth comes from the acclaimed string quartet The Elysian Quartet, featured throughout the record.
