“gauze” was created in direct response to the ongoing genocide in Palestine. The EP takes its name from the material ”gauze” which is thought to have originated in the city of Gaza. Drawing on real recordings from the current war, from a muezzin continuing the call to prayer inside a bombed out mosque, and the voice of assassinated Palestinian writer and activist Ghassan Kanafani, to documentary audio from a Gaza hospital, the EP moves across dissonant garage beats, footwork and jungle inspired beats and mournful vocal textures to render grief, urgency, and faith. The project is informed by the tradition of solidarity with Palestine, particularly through the poetry of June Jordan, whose writing on Palestine in the 1980s remains a touchstone. gauze is ultimately a call to fight globally to bring an end to the occupation of Palestine.
A portion of the release's profits will be donated to the Sameer Project.
