“The Wave” is a song about the moments of retrospection and change that have occurred throughout my life. After moving away from someplace, losing someone, or anything that makes you feel lost, I’d always find some place alone to figure it all out—lying on the roof of my '97 Nissan Sentra or riding my bike around Brooklyn, wandering through a construction site. It’s a song about dealing with the past to be alright with the future.
This song encapsulates the album in just a few minutes. Every song is either about going through moments from my life, stepping from the wave, and figuring out how to move forward. They were each written soon before my first child, Georgia Jett, was born. She is my whole life now, and these songs helped me get ready to meet her and be the father she deserves. Starting with “Scapegoat”, a song about sticking up for yourself, and ending with “Reservoir”, a song about keeping people close when dealing with loss.
Throughout, there are songs about leaving Brooklyn, old friends, failed relationships, climbing old school roofs, tough jobs, and having the best time when you don’t have much but each other.
