Urban America has long since drifted away from the roots of its own folk music. In the fading hills and hollows that once gave birth to fiddle tunes, dance numbers, country blues, rags, chain-gang work hollers, minstrel numbers, and grim mountain ballads of betrayal and murder, almost no living tradition remains — only a handful of old-timers and scattered transplanted enthusiasts. Young people keep fleeing rural areas for paying work, while some turn to cooking meth instead. The dwindling heritage is now kept alive not by rural communities but by city-based musician-archivists like Pat Conte, whose new album is released on vinyl only, on the Jalopy label. The record features 14 old-time pieces played by Conte on fiddle and several banjos, with a hoarse, mumbled, cracked vocal delivery. This is unvarnished, authentic music continuing the line of figures like Wade Ward and Uncle Dave Macon: rough, stoic, mournful, yet wry, bitter, and joyous all at once. The fiddle wails with an almost otherworldly quality; the banjos are thumpy, resonant, with African-rooted overtones. The material varies widely in mood — "Burned a White Man's Barn" is dark and tormented, "Jawbone" is dry and grotesque, and "Colored Aristocracy" is catchy and wry.
