In September 1985, the duo Daryl Hall & John Oates released the live album Live at the Apollo, recorded inside New York's legendary Apollo Theater. What sets the recording apart is the presence of David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks, former lead singers of The Temptations, whose voices once defined the sound of Motown. The set list blends time-tested soul-era classics with songs Hall & Oates were performing in the mid-1980s, forging a bridge between two generations of American popular music. Two months earlier, on July 13, 1985, all four musicians had already shared a stage — at the massive charity event Live Aid — which helped pave the way for their joint concert at the Apollo Theater. Two years later, in 1987, the performance was also released on VHS, featuring a different track order than the audio version.
