Ivar Bjørnson, member of the veteran Norwegian metal band Enslaved with over thirty years of history, and Andrew Liles, known for his work with Nurse With Wound and Current 93, joined forces in 2021 during the COVID pandemic to create a collaborative project called ANVÅR. The pause brought on by lockdowns gave both musicians a rare chance to pursue ideas they hadn't previously had time for. In a casual conversation, they discovered a shared passion — vintage Roland synthesizers: Andrew owns a Roland SH-101, while Ivar owns a Roland SH-1 and an SH-1000. That discovery grew into the concept of a tribute album to these instruments, recorded strictly in analogue fashion. The rules were strict: use only Roland keyboards, with no additional instrumentation, limit each track to ten minutes and ten seconds, and keep post-production and effects to a minimum. The narration, delivered by Melanie Duperrex, is partly drawn from Roland manuals, and the cover art is an adaptation of diagrams from those same manuals. In contrast to today's practice, where VST plugins can convincingly emulate almost any instrument and musicians have limitless sonic choice, Ivar and Andrew deliberately chose the opposite path — returning to authentic analogue sound. The result is the album Hailemal.
