In the late 1960s, German musicians turned away from imitating British and American rock models and began searching for a sound of their own — giving rise to Krautrock, a movement initially met with skepticism (including from John Peel) but later recognized as one of Germany's most significant contributions to rock history. Bear Family released an extensive documentary series, "KRAUT! – Die innovativen Jahre des Krautrock 1968–1979," gathering material from several regional scenes across four double CDs with extensive illustrated booklets. The curator and liner-notes author is Burghard Rausch, a DJ and musician who himself played in Agitation Free, with remastering handled by Marcus Heumann. The set covers four regions: the northern scene with bands like Nektar, Eloy, and Lucifer's Friend; central Germany with La Düsseldorf and Passport; the southern scene with Embryo, Kraan, and Guru Guru; and the legendary West Berlin scene with Ash Ra Tempel, Tangerine Dream, and Klaus Schulze. Each volume contains around two hours of music and a booklet of up to 128 pages, placing the series within the label's broader documentary line that includes "Smash! Boom! Bang!" and "Aus grauer Städte Mauern." The edition is limited in quantity and positioned as a landmark reference work on Krautrock history.
