In the early 1970s, the English port city of Portsmouth was home to a little-known band called Straight — a five-piece distinguished by an unusual trait for the time: they performed without a drummer. Around the turn of 1971 and 1972, the group recorded a full-length album, but through a combination of circumstances the record was shelved and never reached listeners. Decades later, the recording is finally seeing the light of day under the title Going For Broke, and its release counts as a genuine discovery for collectors and connoisseurs of the era. The album's sound is built on dense group harmonies in the manner of America's The Byrds, dreamlike, wistful arrangements, and acoustic guitars that conjure a thick, almost hazy atmosphere.
