In 2012, the stage of London's Cafe OTO became the site of one of the club's most powerful duo performances. Japanese experimental guitarist Keiji Haino, known for his project Fushitsusha, met drummer Steve Noble, a central figure of London's free improvisation scene renowned for his massive kit and finely tuned sense of dynamics.
The concert was built on stark contrasts: silence would suddenly erupt into a storm of percussion, with gongs and bowls flying under Noble's blows, while Haino's guitar, run through fuzz and feedback, roared like a living creature. At its most extreme, the performance plunged into full chaotic freak-out mode before snapping back, just as abruptly, to an almost surgically precise, meditative hush — Haino barely grazing the strings to draw out fragile, trembling tones.
A particularly unexpected moment came when Haino set aside the electric guitar entirely and picked up a small wooden flute, lending the performance a new, almost ritualistic dimension. Despite the pervasive darkness and paranoid tension running through many passages, the overall impression left by the concert was surprisingly uplifting — in large part thanks to the space and air that Noble was able to build around even the most turbulent bursts of sound.
