Henry Sapoznik - Banjew (2017)

BAND/ARTIST: Henry Sapoznik

Henry Sapoznik is a banjo player, producer, and archivist who grew up in Brooklyn in a family of Holocaust refugees. Within an ultra-Orthodox Hasidic upbringing, he absorbed cantorial liturgy by ear from his cantor father from age six. Longing to belong to America, he remained an outsider among his non-Jewish peers—until the late 1960s antiwar movement introduced him to folk music through the songs of Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, and Cisco Houston. A chance encounter with Mike Seeger's Old Time Country Music record redirected him from politicized folk toward unadorned old-time tradition.

His immersion in the genre coincided with a wave of reissues on the County label, instructional materials from Oak Publications, and features in Sing Out! magazine. Starting in 1974, banjoist Ray Alden brought him on trips to Mount Airy, North Carolina, to learn from musicians Fred Cockerham and Tommy Jarrell—visits that continued for five years. It was Jarrell's pointed question about why Jews played old-time music that pushed Sapoznik to revalue his own musical heritage, eventually making him a central figure in the klezmer revival.

In 1982 he began adapting old-time banjo techniques to the tenor-banjo style once used in 1920s–30s Jewish dance bands, creating a distinctive personal approach that became a fixture on today's klezmer bandstands. Decades later, in fall 2016, a reminder of his own mortality prompted him to return to clawhammer banjo and record a new old-time album—the forty-first release in his catalog of Jewish and klezmer music—made in January 2017 with longtime collaborators and new musicians, culminating in a live concert.
