1953 was a pivotal year in the history of rhythm and blues — a moment when several strands of the genre coexisted on the American music scene, blending into a sound that would soon give rise to rock 'n' roll. The year was marked by hits from artists such as Fats Domino, Lloyd Price, Ruth Brown, and Big Joe Turner. A special place in this history belongs to Big Mama Thornton, who recorded the original version of "Hound Dog," later made famous by Elvis Presley. Against this backdrop, doo-wop groups like The Clovers and The Orioles competed for listeners' attention with masters of electric blues — B.B. King, Little Walter, and Muddy Waters — as well as with old-school jump blues acts, including Buddy Johnson's band.
