The Glimmer Stars formed in 2000. Twenty-six years later they release this improvised explosive device rife with glam overtones, thanks to lead singer Mini Mendez’ voice. He sounds like a cross between Jeremy and Bowie, but always his own man. “I Don’t Wanna Let You Go Tonight” detonates in your face, sinking hooks everywhere. “Run Away” and “I Need To Know” both feature that first/fourth chord progression endemic to rock and roll but the other songs don’t. The Glimmer Stars (what a brilliant moniker!) simply play Rock—the kind we love! If I had to define the boundaries of their musical universe, I’d place it somewhere between The Boys and David Johansen! The great Los Angeles music scene is really made up of several different scenes which sometimes overlap. One of the bands at the heart of one of those scenes, and having a delightful tendency to overlap with others, is The Glimmer Stars. The band has been delivering fun and energetic power pop and garage rock for like two decades. The kind of music that in better times would be on the charts, where of course it deserves to be. But on or off those charts, The Glimmer Stars seem to be gleefully dedicated to rocking our socks off and making us smile. Even before I heard their new album Someday’s A Long Time I was totally sold on the two pre-released songs. The Glimmer Stars’ new album - Someday’s A Long Time - is the band’s second full-length release for Rum Bar Records. The ten song LP occupies the sonic territory somewhere between the Small Faces and the Raspberries, while still maintaining it’s own character and identity. The vulnerability of The Glimmer Stars’ music - tough, tender, and gritty - is there to flavor the hard medicine of life, loss, and experience. The band plays with an urgency that shows they know what needs to be done, and the time to do it is now.
The group has toured the East Coast and is planning trips to Texas, Arizona, and Nevada, as well as back to the East Coast this year, and continue to be a fixture on the Los Angeles underground rock and roll scene playing with such bands as The Dogs, Pat Todd & The Rankoutsiders, Richard Duguay & The Beautiful Decline, Tony Marsico and the Ugly Thingz, The Blessings, and too many others to mention. Though The Glimmer Stars have been around nearly two decades, they have come into their own on this new album. They bring everything they have, because they know tomorrow is promised to no one.
