Hunk is the sole, self-titled album from the New York band of the same name, released on Geffen Records in March 1996. The lineup featured Kenny Siegal on guitar and vocals, Drew Santarsiero on bass and vocals, Brian Geltner on drums and vocals, and a female vocalist whose name appears inconsistently across sources (Nellie Hooper / Nelle Hooper / Nellie Harper) — not to be confused with the British producer Nellee Hooper of Massive Attack and Soul II Soul, whom she shares a name with by coincidence.
The record was produced by Don Fleming, known for his production work with Sonic Youth, Hole, Teenage Fanclub, and Screaming Trees. According to AllMusic, Fleming's gleaming, majestic production is what most distinguishes Hunk from the band members' later work, applying a modern-rock polish seemingly aimed at competing commercially with the likes of Soundgarden and Stone Temple Pilots.
The band broke up within a year of the album's release, an album AllMusic describes as having "vanished with nary a trace." Siegal and Geltner soon after formed Johnny Society, a project the same review credits with fully realizing elements — Geltner's rhythmic drive, Siegal's melodic songwriting — that were already present but not fully unlocked on Hunk.
