French singer Frida Boccara released "Un jour, un enfant" ("One Day, a Child") in 1969 — a lyrical ballad composed by Emil Stern with lyrics by Eddy Marnay, portraying the world through a child's eyes. The song represented France at the 1969 Eurovision Song Contest, where, under the rule in force at the time, it was performed entirely in French under the direction of conductor Franck Pourcel. Performed fourteenth in the running order, it scored 18 points and tied for first place with three other entries — "De troubadour" by Dutch singer Lenny Kuhr, "Boom Bang-a-Bang" by British singer Lulu, and "Vivo cantando" by Spanish singer Salomé — giving France its fourth Eurovision victory. The song's success extended far beyond the French-speaking world: Boccara re-recorded it in four more languages — German ("Es schlägt ein Herz für dich"), English ("Through the Eyes of a Child"), Spanish ("Un día, un niño"), and Italian ("Canzone di un amore perduto") — cementing its status as one of the most recognizable European hits of the late 1960s.
