La notte e il momento (The Night and the Moment) is Ennio Morricone's score for the 1994 film directed by Anna Maria Tatò, adapted from Crébillon fils' 18th-century libertine novella of the same name. Set in Enlightenment-era France, the story follows a seductive writer who spends his nights in a marquise's chambers, trading verbal and amorous sparring matches interwoven with recollections of his past — including a prison term and a mysterious neighboring inmate. The score was recorded with the Unione Musicisti di Roma orchestra at Forum Studio in Rome, conducted by the composer himself.
The music deliberately evokes the sound-world of the 18th century: the brisk, buoyant baroque opening theme "A Caccia Di Lei" recurs in "A Candele Spente" and "Ritrovati." Morricone moves between romanticism and comedy in "Ballerina," "Sesso E Ironia," "Amore E Gioco," and "All'Aria Aperta," while a harpsichord ("Un Clavicembalo") anchors the period setting and tense string tremolos color "Spiegazioni Di Torture." The love theme that gives the album its title recurs across several cues and receives a vocal setting, "The Loving Game," with lyrics by Cesare De Natale sung by Simona Patitucci.
The original 1995 CD (Epic/Sony) held 17 tracks; GDM's 2011 reissue added six alternate ("Pt. 2") versions of key themes, approved by the composer, expanding the album to 23 tracks and a 58:28 running time. The score reached vinyl for the first time in 2017, via Music On Vinyl, in a limited edition of 1,000 numbered copies on transparent 180-gram vinyl.
Critics — notably a detailed analysis on ColonneSonore.net — describe much of the score as deliberately mannered and "neoclassical," a stylized pastiche of the baroque, calling it formally accomplished but somewhat reined-in compared to Morricone's more personal, romantic scores, while singling out cues like "Ballerina," "Sesso E Ironia," "Spiegazioni Di Torture," and the title theme as moments where his individual voice comes through.
